In 1999
Henoc Lucien decided to move and build a house for his family in Berard, a
village in the southeastern part of Cap Haitien.Over the next several years, many short-term missions teams came
to assist in the construction.This
building would not only house Henoc Lucien and his family, but it would also be
a place for guests and short-term missions teams to stay while they were in
Haiti.Henoc made one
observation. There were no churches in the surroundingvillage. Most of the people were
unsaved. There were no marriages. People began having children when they
were teenagers and it seemed like the situation kept on getting worse.
Henoc felt a little bit strange moving in such a neighborhood and began to
envision the need to spread the Gospel through some form of organized
evangelistic outreach.
That summer, there were several young men who came from a Bible school in Port
au Prince to do their pastoral internship at the EFC of Cap-Haitien. A
team came from the United States with the desire to do personal evangelism. So,
20 teams of four were organized and they began spreading the good news of the
Gospel around Berard. For one week, the teams would leave around 8:00 am,
take a break for lunch, and then go back in the afternoon with the intent of
sharing the good news with every single person in the neighborhood. At
night, different meetings were held outdoors showing evangelistic movies and
sharing more about the changes Jesus could make in an individual's life.
By the end of the week, there were more than five hundred conversions within
the village of Berard and Cardouche. A ministry was born within those
areas. In the past three years there have been more than one hundred
baptisms. Lives have been changed. A piece of property was
purchased in the hopes that a church could some day be built in Berard. In the meantime, the Berard church is
meeting in Henoc Lucien's backyard under a gazebo. Right now, there are
more than 200 who attend the church in Berard. We are hoping that within
the years to come, there will be more transformation in the community as the
Holy Spirit continues to move.
