In Haiti, children begin school at the age of 3. At College Susan Schuenke we have 3 year old, 4 year old and 5 year old kindergarten. At the
completion of these 3 years, students enter elementary
school starting with 1st grade. At the end of 6th
grade, every student is required to take a government standardized test in order
to qualify to go into 7th grade. Even if a student passes the testing administered by his school, he must repeat his grade if he does not pass the government
test. The same process applies to 9th, 12th and 13th grade.
Our school has had a 100% success rate in these government testing
sessions.
CSS graduates are all over Haiti and in the Dominican Republic studying
in universities and preparing for the future. Several of our
students are studying medicine in Haiti and in the DR. Some are
in business schools, others in nursing programs, and and others are enrolled in computer
programs. One of our girls is in her second year of university
studying engineering. Another young man is in his fourth year of
medical school at a university in Santiago, DR. In the DR and in
Haiti, students who wish to be medical doctors are accepted right out
of high school and go for a period of seven to eight years. Each year the two brightest
students from among the universities in Santiago are
chosen to be sent to Puerto Rico for a special program. After
taking all the tests, one of our students was chosen to be sent for this special training. He will soon begin his studies in Puerto Rico.
With its logo, AD ASTRA (meaning toward the stars), CSS students are not
just aiming for the stars, now they are proud to say to everyone that they
are among the stars. During the month
of November 2008, CSS participated in a soccer tournament organized by the
FEDERATION HAITIENNE DE FOOTBALL. This tournament was in memory of our heroes
who fought our wars of independence. The Battle of Independence of Haiti took
place on November 18th. CSS was the champion in the Under-20 division. In 2009, the soccer teams from CSS again turned in some stellar results with many finishing at the top in the city!
In spite of all the accomplishments at our school, our students
continue to struggle with the need for nutrition and scholarship assistance.
Support for our scholarship program and our nutrition fund are vital to
the success of our students. We need much prayer and support so
that we can train leaders for the church in Haiti, for the country in
general and for the glory of our Lord.

We are most
grateful to those who have invested their resources and prayers into
the students and staff of College Susan Schuenke. Your support has
been invaluable to the continued operation of this ministry. Our
school is named for one of our faithful supporters, Sue Schuenke.
Sue's vision for a school in Cap Haitien was instrumental in the
beginnings of CSS. Sue taught elementary and special needs
children herself in both the public and Christian setting for eleven
years. Her heart was especially invested in the most needy children.
Sue was committed to them individually and collectively. She excelled
in providing each one with a safe, caring, and respectful environment.
Sue writes: "Just as I believe that without Christ there cannot be
true learning...without Christ there cannot be true teaching. My
classroom in public and Christian school has always been my mission
field where I have been blessed to use the gifts of teaching, serving,
and compassion. I yearn to serve Him in an environment where truth is
openly taught so that I might experience the joy of teaching and
learning."
Sue went to be with the Lord in June 2000, but we wanted her name to remain alive in the hearts of Haitians for years to come.
